In the last few years, girls flag football team has been great team. According to the Head Coach, Herman Travis Cantrel,l from his 6 years of coaching the flag football team he’s been on the state championship twice, but lost twice by East High School and Dimond High School. Although they’ve lost twice the team this season are even hungrier to get that championship ring.
Their recent game against Chugiak High School was successful the team beat them 21-6. They still have to win their next two games against Eagle River High School and East High School. Although Eagle River and East beat the lady eagles earlier this season, that doesn’t affect the Lady Eagle’s confidence.
This season the team is a lot different from last year’s because this season they have plenty of freshmen and sophomore, there’s only like five-seven returners. “Last year’s team lost to Dimond High School on the semi finals, this season the girls has to win their next two games in order to get the same record as last season,” Coach Cantrell said.
According to coach Cantrell, Dimond has always been the toughest team they’ve played because, “They don’t make mistakes, they’re very welcome coached and disciplined.”
“We have a lot of young people on this team so it’s not surprising that they make a lot of mistakes,” Cantrell said. This season Dimond beat them really bad (42-0), But the Lady Eagles are looking forward to face them if they make it all the way to the state championship.
The players for this season really get along to each other. According to Kyana Cornejo, she doesn’t have a favorite teammate because she likes everyone equally. Also she said, “everyone on this team are amazing teammates.” Although Kyana was the baby of the team last season, she still had fun with the team. Just like this year.
Kyana said, “If I had the chance to start someone every game I would start Abby Fisher” because I think she’s the best player on this team. Also she said, “If I was the coach for this team I would make the team bond more,” because she thinks team bonding is the key for teamwork.
October 14, 2014 the lady eagles played their last game against East, once again they’ve lost on semi finals. The score was 6-0, It was a devastating loss because the eagles were one touch away from tying the game for a over time. According to Coach Cantrell most of the players are young so they’re going to have more opportunities to get to state championship, they just have to work hard.
